Press release (May 28, 2007)   MICHAEL IS MADE OF THE 'WRITE' STUFF

Michael Brown, aged 10, of Middleham Church of England Primary School, has won the inaugural Wensleydale Writers competition.

As part of the Middleham Stables Open Day celebrations, the Wensleydale Writers held a writing competition for children of 11 years and under. The subject which the children had to write about was the Middleham Jewel.

Mauram Burner of the Wenselydale Writers said: “We had around 50 entries, and the three founder members of Wensleydale Writers read them all and came up with a short list of four. Robin Battersby, the director of Arts in Richmond, then had the difficult task of picking a winner.

“He chose Michael Brown’s story. Michael was presented with his prize of a £10 book token, donated by Philip Wickes of Castle Hill book shop in Richmond , by Richmondshire MP and Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague,” she said.

The Wensleydale Writers, whose numbers have swelled from three to 15 since their formation a year ago, also held a prize draw for a signed copy of William Hague’s book, Pitt the Younger. Mr P Jameson of Ripon drew the winning ticket.

Press release (May 27, 2007)                                      MIDDLEHAM STABLES OPEN DAY RAISES £20,000 FOR CHARITY

The ever-popular Middleham Stables Open Event, which attracted a record-breaking 7,000 people on Good Friday this year, has raised £20,000 for North Yorkshire and racing charities. William Hague, MP for Richmondshire and Shadow Foreign Secretary, has handed over cheques to the local charities and organisations at the Middleham Key Centre.

The beneficiaries included: The Middleham Key Centre itself, Racing Welfare, Middleham Sports Association, Middleham Over 60s Luncheon Club, Children Today, Middleham Town Council Community Fund, Middleham Primary School, Middleham Under 5’s Playgroup, St Alkelda’s Church, Middleham, Herriot Hospice Homecare, Wensleydale High School PTA, Leyburn Town band, Richmond and Catterick Furniture Store and the Middleham Community Wellbeing Group.

The Middleham Stables Open Event, sponsored by the Northern Echo, presented a unique opportunity to visit some of England’s top racing stables. It was officially opened by television and radio star Kathryn Apanowicz, the partner of the late Richard Whiteley, and the Rt Hon William Hague, MP for Richmondshire, and Shadow Foreign Secretary. Billy Hartman, who plays Terry Woods in the popular television soap opera Emmerdale, was the guest of honour. William Hague said: “Middleham is a tremendous success story and fully deserves its reputation as the finest racing centre in the north of England. We have some tremendously successful trainers and it is wonderful that they open their yards to so many people, especially as the proceeds go to such deserving local charities”

Tim Burner, the organiser of the Open Event, said: “The £20,000 raised represents a great achievement on the part of so many people, including the trainers, the loyal staff at the Key Centre and, last but not least, the thousands of people who flocked to our town and ensured the day was a resounding success. We are looking forward to an bigger and better event next year”.

James Bethell, the chairman of the Middleham Trainers Association, commented: “The Open Event provided an opportunity to meet the winners and to talk to the trainers, jockeys and stable hands at this ever-popular annual event. This year it has proved more popular than ever and has raised a tremendous amount of money for charity”.
