Middleham has been twinned with Agincourt in Northern France since 1988. Over the years members have made regular visits to this small village in the Pas de Calais and have become firm friends with all the residents.
In return we welcome friends from Agincourt to Middleham. Visitors stay with members in their homes and are entertained, usually over a long weekend, with visits to local places of interest.  A Grand dinner usually rounds off their weekend.

On one memorable occasion members and guests visited the races at Thirsk and found that a race had been named in their honour!  They were also given a back room tour of the weighing room, judges box and were allowed into the paddock to see the horses at close quarters!

The Town Twinning Association is perhaps the largest active social organisation in Middleham and hold regular fund-raising and social events throughout the year.  We always mark Bastille Day and the anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt with a social event.

The Battle of Agincourt

On the 25th October 1415 ~ Saint Crispin's Day ~ on fields near the French village of Agincourt was fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Hundred
Year's War.  The English army of King Henry V crushed a French army led
by Connetable  d'Albret ~ even though the English were outnumbered
by at least three to one!

Agincourt or Azincourt ~ as it looks today:
In the heart of the Artois countryside in Northern France, Agincourt is well worth a visit.  Here you can learn about the historical facts of the famous Battle of Agincourt and visit the exciting, new, interactive Museum of Local History ( open all year round).
The Museum contains documents and copies of weapons and armour with a scale model of the battlefield with over 250 figurines - providing a valuable insight into the way battles were fought at that time.  One showcase contains a remarkable collection of medieval paving stones from the 14th century, discovered on the site of the fortress.

Agincourt does not intend to glorify what was one of the bloodiest battles of the Hundred Years' War but instead reveal a page in the history of medieval France.  You can follow in the footsteps of the archers along a route through this beautiful countryside, which extends from Agincourt to Crecy.  This region possesses a remarkable historical and cultural heritage with castles, abbeys, chapels, mills, manor houses and traditional houses ~ it was used as a route through to distant destinations but has always extended a warm welcome to anyone passing through.....

TWINNING NEWS
by Peter Swales

Members met at Tennants Centre in Leyburn on Sunday February 1st for their Annual General Meeting.
The Chairman spoke of all the events that members had enjoyed over the years. Treasure hunts, (with clues in French), suppers, barbeques, film shows, wine tastings, cookery demonstrations, visits to open air-theatre to see Henry V, (we cheered for the French), a day at the races with a race named in honour of our French visitors and of course our weekends away in Agincourt etc etc

After a memorable lunch we were entertained by Mr David Avery, Head Gardener for English Heritage at Brodsworth Hall South Yorkshire. He talked about French gardens, "Cottages to Castles"

The committee for 2004/2005 were elected, and at a later meeting the new committee elected their officers for the new season. Mrs Sheila Webster has left us after many years in office and Mrs Tammi Tolhurst the new Mayor of Middleham, has accepted an invitation to join us.

Members meet on Friday March 12th for a Chilli Supper in Middleham Town Hall. Rumour has it that we might have the pleasure of a "French accordion player" to entertain us.

We hope to welcome a party of visitors from Agincourt to Middleham at the end of May.  News of this later.

We are starting petanque (boules) practice on Sunday March 28th at Akebar Park. Kick off 3pm. Matt Blyton, world class petanque player, and international team manager is our coach. He lives at Constable Burton and inspired our members when he gave a talk in the autumn.
